The second educational module of the STEM is FEM project that was dedicated to IT was held in Kyiv. During the project, 23 girls met with successful Ukrainian women who take leading positions in IT companies in Ukraine and other countries. This news was announced by the initiator of the STEM is FEM project, investor, businessman and founder of the company GenIT Sergey Tokarev.
“STEM industries are very important for the development of the country, its economy, infrastructure and stronger performance on the global stage. We are pleased that both business and people who run the country understand this aspect. Our project started just a few months ago, but every day more and more friends join it. We hope that in the near future there will be a large and strong female STEM community in Ukraine,” Tokarev says.
The educational project started in September 2019. Its goal is to motivate high school girls to choose a career related to science and technology.
“We are working in IT and we see that there are fewer women in IT development sector than men. This problem is relevant not only for Ukraine, but for the whole world. The Western world put the question point-blank already a several years ago,” – says the businessman. “There are many reasons for this situation, but the major ones are stereotypes and fear.”
The project is aimed at high school female students and consists of few parts, including online testing, a two-day module in Kyiv, and a contest for participants. The first module was dedicated to Biotechnology. Back then, schoolgirls met with the Minister of Healthcare of Ukraine Zoryana Skaletskaya, Deputy Minister of Economics Inna Meteleva and specialists in neurobiology and microbiology, scientists, as well as female employees of medical laboratories.
In the second module that was dedicated to IT, the girls were listening to motivational speeches by the Minister of Social Policy of Ukraine Yulia Sokolovskaya and Verkhovna Rada deputy Kira Rudik. Large international IT companies helped girls to know better the IT industry from inside.
In January, the third module of the project dedicated to Energy and Ecology will start.
