Italian filmmaker Elena Rossini is passionate about championing representation, feminist messages and progressive values. One project where she’s done this work is through creating GIFs and virtual stickers covering all of these messages and more. Its success has been eye-opening. Rossini recently celebrated her GIFs crossing the one billion view milestone, something which points to the power of her work and the ever-growing amount of interest in empowering and educating around these vital issues. The enthusiasm surrounding the project remains high, with more GIFs being added.

“Our culture rarely celebrates the professional lives of women,” commented the high-energy Rossini. “Many women often feel underrepresented and underestimated. I certainly do. So this project is my teeny tiny contribution, harnessing the power of GIFs, to increase the visibility of women across professional fields and promote progressive values. I love the feeling of searching for ‘architect’ or ‘film director’ GIFs and seeing my images of inspiring women at the top of search results. My recent virtual stickers with messages supporting #BlackLivesMatter really resonated with the public and got over 200 million views in the span of two weeks. And now my channel has had over a billion views! This is an example many people can follow by just doing something they are good at to promote a positive message and give the project a chance to grow. The results can be stunning.”

As a filmmaker Rossini’s most acclaimed work has been the documentary The Illusionists. The Illusionists deeply investigates the globalization of beauty ideals and the dark side of advertising. It was filmed in eight countries, across four continents. Feminist icons like Jean Kilbourne, Susie Orbach and Laura Mulvey (who coined the term “the male gaze”) are featured in the film. The documentary has won near universal praise.
