In an effort to recruit larger groups of volunteers to Haiti, Experience Mission is now partnering with local church in Petit Goave to host mission teams. EM Haiti headquarters will continue to be in Carrefour where local EM staff coordinate education and microloan programs year round, but mission teams will now be serving in Petit Goave. This beautiful coastal town was severely affected by the 2010 earthquake, and there continues to be many needs in the community. With a larger facility, EM plans to begin recruiting teams of up to 80 people for the summer of 2014 while also providing volunteer opportunities throughout the year.
EM mission trips are specifically designed for volunteers to work alongside local leaders in support of a long term vision. EM has a team of Haitian staff who are all earthquake survivors that are fluent in English and have experience coordinating mission teams. Volunteers will primarily be serving through construction projects and outreach to local children. Upcoming projects include work on a local school and hospital as well as homes for individual families. These trips are designed to meet practical needs in the community, but also have an emphasis on building relationships.
The Model for Mutual Influence outlines EM’s philosophy for developing healthy cross-cultural relationships. This model emphasizes the importance of respecting people’s dignity by building trust and respect.
