Dr. Reve Chaston of Layton Implants specializes in dental implants and periodontics with offices in Layton and Bountiful, Utah. In addition to serving his patients, Dr. Chaston is committed to supporting Utah’s dental health community by giving lectures on specialty topics to educate local dentists. He recently addressed a group of dentists about the benefits of using digital intraoral scanners to improve patient care.
At the October 27 forum for Utah dentists, Dr. Chaston discussed the advantages of intraoral scanners for creating digital impressions. The scanners can save dentists time and money and allow them to develop accurate impressions with a more desirable fit and form.
The earliest digital scanners did not always produce high quality impressions. Dr. Chaston explained that the newest scanners produce much better impressions at a greater value. And where older scanners may have been difficult to operate, the new scanners are simple to use.
Dr. Chaston shared the following steps for taking digital intraoral impressions for dental implants:
- Place the dental implant in the area of the missing tooth in the patient’s mouth
- Take a digital impression of the implant following its placement in the patient’s mouth using an intraoral digital scanner
- Email the digital impression to a high-tech dental lab
- The dental lab will digitally design and mill a permanent crown, then send it to the patient’s dentist
- The patient’s dentist will then attach the crown to the dental implant
The dental lab can also mill a temporary crown that dentists can attach as the implant heals. This eliminates the need to wear an uncomfortable retainer with a fake tooth on it.
“I am keenly interested in advancing local dentistry and periodontics by educating my peers,” said Dr. Chaston. “As more dentists learn new techniques for better dental implants, more patients will be able to get implants in a fast and comfortable manner.”
In addition to dental implants, Dr. Chaston specializes in bone grafting, sinus augmentation, soft tissue grafts, cosmetic gum treatment, periodontal cleanings, and IV sedation. For more information about Dr. Chaston and Layton Implants, visit www.laytonimplants.com.
