On July 12, 1979, Chicago shock-jock, Steve Dahl, organized an event called Disco Demolition Night, at Chicago White Sox’s Comisky Field. Dahl invited his listeners to attend the sporting double-header with disco records, for Dahl – a noted critic of the genre – to literally blow up the records on-field.
50, 000 attended the event, and after the detonation of the records, which destroyed part of the field, thousands rushed the field destroying the bases, lighting the batting cage on fire, and generally running amok. Riot police had to be dispersed, and 39 people were arrested.
On July 12, 40 years after the fateful event, pre-sales will open for Mumbaata’s release of the ‘Disco Will Never Be Gone’ (Original Mix) EP to reflect on the controversial event, which was seen by many as having racial and homophobic components, and to honor the positive influence that disco has had on many of today’s most popular musical genres.
In further recognition of the event, the initial release will be exclusively available on 12” vinyl. After 60 days the EP will launch on digital channels.
The album also features tracks/contributions from Flow e Zeo, Diego Mey, Leuroy and Jordi Iven.
10% of sales of the digital and vinyl release will be donated towards musical education for the youth of Chicago.
