Detroit Father, LLC is announcing the next phase of a campaign to equip public men’s restrooms in the city with baby changing tables.
Social Entrepreneur Damarqio (DK) Williams, who leads the organization, says this initiative, Change Challenge, is a partnership between Detroit Father’s philanthropy arm and Pampers, which has committed to placing 5,000 new changing stations in men’s public restrooms across the U.S. and Canada by 2021.
The movement initiated in Detroit with Make A Change Day in Oct 2019, in collaboration with Marvin Jones of the NFL Detroit Lions. They installed several baby changing stations in the men’s restrooms at the Lasky Recreation Center.
Williams says Detroit Father is currently looking for more businesses that want to have the baby changing stations installed in their men’s restrooms. “This is an opportunity for businesses to take advantage of this equitable benefit,” he says.
“It’s important as a father to be able to have equitable places to take my daughter and not have to worry that there’s a baby changing station or not,” he says, “We also want to promote Black fatherhood by encouraging fathers to take their children places just by ourselves.”
Non-profit organizations or for-profit businesses in Detroit that are frequented by adults and children are eligible to apply for the program. The baby changing station is considered an in-kind donation.
Detroit Father’s focus is to project a positive narrative about Black fatherhood, particularly in urban communities.
