DesignRush Reveals How the Apps We Download Most Directly Mirror Current Social Media Trends

Provides new insights on the mobile social movement and why certain types of apps are dominating the market

DesignRush, the new digital design magazine that serves as an online showcase for the best contemporary cutting edge design elements, analyzed a list of the most downloaded apps from the iTunes app store and Google Play, as well as the top 5 most downloaded apps of all time worldwide, and discovered that the mobile social trend is growing at an unprecedented rate. According to DesignRush, the majority of the apps downloaded are social networking and messaging apps.
“In the top 5 most downloaded free apps of all time, Facebook dominates the list, with four out of five of the top apps falling under their company umbrella,” reports DesignRush founder, Gabriel Shaoolian. “In fact, Snapchat is the only non-Facebook property to make the top-5 list, and back in 2013, Facebook tried to acquire them, as well!”
DesignRush Chief Editor Stephanie Sharlow reports that the design world is constantly changing and growing, which makes it important to stay on top of new trends and even fading ones. “These lists clearly demonstrate the undeniable power of social media and mobile social — it’s a trend that’s sure to continue in the years to come.”
According to data from eMarketer, U.S. mobile users spend over 30 minutes per day with mobile social — up from just over 20 minutes per day in 2015. This explains why social and messaging apps make up a majority of the most popular apps on the market.
Apps that dominated the three lists were WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat. These are all applications whose exclusive purpose is to make it easier for people to communicate with one another. Entertainment apps like Netflix and Pandora made appearances on the list, but clearly mobile social apps were, universally, the most downloaded.
