The Master Plan creates a blueprint for construction projects and capital improvements, and was designed with input from more than 100 zoo staff representing every department.  The zoo has not developed this scale of plan for the past twenty years.

The plan came about as the result of over four years of intensive assessment of the current campus. Both the bear/human swimming pool and the artifical Baobab tree, which will feature high-hanging classrooms from the branches, will attract new visitors and thrill regulars.

Currently the zoo has 71 individual buildings with 26 of those larger than 3,000 square feet.  Twelve more 3,000 square-foot structures will be added, but the full number of buildings will remain the same.  A city ordinance requires that zoo structures be no more than 3,000 square feet.

The priority, according to zoo staff, is to improve conditions for the animals while also creating benefits fro customers, such as closer views of the animals in some cases.

A specific timetable and funding has not been announced yet.
