On June 30, the State of Connecticut shut down the Sign Language Interpreting Department causing controversy throughout the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community.

Hartford, Connecticut (PRUnderground) July 5th, 2016

The decision to close the Connecticut Department of Rehabilitation Services Sign Language Interpretation Program has left many throughout the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community devastated. While large scale layoffs often leave a wake of dismay and confusion, it forces us to evaluate all options for the greater good of our communities. Interpreters & Translators, Inc. has dedicated its’ 30 years of existence in Connecticut to serving both the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Limited-English Proficiency Communities. We look forward to continuing to build upon our relationship with both communities in order to best serve those in need, both interpreters and recipients alike.

LMS_Logo_ITI_TXT copy.jpgInterpretation services are crucial for equality and adherence to various federal statutes such as the American with Disabilities Act and the Civil Rights Act. While the demand for Sign Language and spoken language services continues to grow, there is little support to encourage bilingual individuals to enter the workforce as interpreters. Interpreters here in Connecticut and across the nation deserve recognition and respect for the important work that they do serving their local communities day in and day out.

There are various solutions to bridge communication gaps, in person interpreting will always provide the best level of service and care. Given the choice, both organizations and recipients prefer to work with an in person interpreter. They provide a level of personal touch and comfort whether in a doctor’s office, a courtroom, or a community setting. Due to the extremely high demand for Sign Language interpreters and relatively low supply throughout the state, organizations have resorted to alternative technologies such as Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) or Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) as a backup solution. Long standing and established companies such as Interpreters & Translators, Inc. have the capacity, efficiencies, and necessary processes to handle all requests throughout the State of Connecticut in a culturally sensitive manner.
