Rocky Mountain Forest Products started as a mom-and-pop lumber supplier in Colorado 47 years ago. Today, the family-owned business is one of the largest lumber dealers in the state, and it recently gained national attention for breaking into an elite ranking of the country’s top 100 pro dealers and lumberyards.

RMFP ranks as #82 on the prestigious “Top 100” list published by LBM Journal, which is the leading media company for the lumber/building materials distribution channel. The list ranked companies according to 2020 sales and celebrated their resilience in an unprecedented year.

This year’s ranking “reflects more than a typical calendar year of doing business,” said the LBM Journal in an article recognizing the 100 honorees. The article lauded the lumberyards and pro dealers for “pivoting swiftly, enacting safety protocols, allowing office staff to work from home, conducting customer meetings via video chat, and adding online ordering and curbside pick-up to meet demand while keeping employees and customers safe.”

RMFP, which specializes in lumber and composite decking, fencing, and siding materials, was one of only two companies from the Rocky Mountain West that made the list. Taylor Poole, Chief Growth Officer for RMFP, said that his company is no stranger to adjusting to tough times. “We almost had to close our doors in 2008 because of the recession, but we changed our business model and our branding strategy and ended up thriving. Last year was a time for more adapting, and we are pleased that we were able to continue to grow in spite of the challenging circumstances.”

Poole said that early preparations made a big difference in his company’s growth strategy during the pandemic. “First, we had to deal with all of the safety issues, and then we were grappling with limited supply as demand for building materials began to soar during COVID. We acted early to order ahead and leveraged our good relationships with suppliers to get our customers what they needed. This allowed us to avoid shortages like a lot of the Big Box stores had to deal with, and we never resorted to price gouging.”

RMFP, with two lumberyards in Denver and one in Colorado Springs, takes the middleman out of the lumber distribution process, buying directly from mills and passing the savings on to their customers, which include contractors and DIY-ers. They are proud to have served more than 1 million Colorado customers.
