Plans for Colorado State University’s new $220 million stadium are well underway, with a projected completion date of fall 2017, just before fall semester, adding valuable new construction jobs in Colorado.
The stadium would have total seating capacity of 40,000 and potentially 50,000 square feet of classroom space. It would be located on the southwest side of the Fort Collins CSU campus and would displace the Plant Environmental Research Center.
The stadium project has been controversial because of its high price tag including an estimated $20 million for infrastructure which would be covered with public funds, and its location on public lands, also a subsidy of sorts.
The controversy stems as well from the fact that CSU already has a stadium–Hughes Stadium, though proponents of the new stadium counter that the 46 year old stadium was built cheaply and is in need of costly upgrades of u p to $49 million. Another argument in favor of the new stadium is that it is right on campus versus Hughes location which is 3 miles away.
