The Coast Guard Spouses’ Club of Sector New York will host a special evening at Fort Wadsworth for their member families in celebration of the Month of the Military Child on Friday, April 26th. The family night will feature a bullying prevention and leadership workshop, Raising Superheroes, presented by national speaker and author, Susan S. Raisch. The workshop is based on her book, “Superheroes Wear Mom Jeans: The Tangled Ball Guide to Anti-Bullying for Parents of Young Children.”
“Children with parents serving in the military face a variety of challenges, including multiple moves and the vulnerability of often being the ‘new kid.’ My goal is to offer resources to help military parents navigate the ups and downs of their children’s social lives so ‘milkids’ not only survive these obstacles but thrive,” said Ms. Raisch. “We can learn from their resilience and support military parents as they raise future leaders. Leadership is the anti-bully.”
Ms. Raisch shares information and actionable tips from Harvard, Yale, Committee for Children, International Bullying Prevention Association (IBPA), PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, Understood, and Common Sense Media, among other nationally recognized experts in the fields of child psychology, bullying prevention, online safety, leadership and self-care.
“As military parents who are often faced with helping our children adjust to new situations as they grow up, we need all the tools possible to help them become their best and most confident selves,” said April Beane, president, Coast Guard Spouses’ Club of Sector New York. “As a military support group, we are happy to offer something to our members and the community that both honors our children and our role as parents.”
The family night, which includes the Raising Superheroes Workshop for parents as well as a variety of superhero activities for kids, is sponsored by Maintech, a leading national IT infrastructure support company.
“We salute not only members of the military but their entire families, as well. They all make sacrifices, including the children,” said Frank D’Alessio, president and co-founder, Maintech. “It is our honor to make this evening of education and entertainment possible for these deserving families.”
Fort Wadsworth is located on Staten Island, New York.
