There’s few places in the world where history, culture, and food connect and interplay with each other as much as they do in South Africa. It is also a place where freedom is genuinely valued and cherished. In that spirit acclaimed South African Chef Cazlinn Carstens, owner of Cazlinn’s Kombuis, has announced the release of a “A Taste of Freedom” cookbook in honor of Freedom Day, April 27th. “A Taste of Freedom” explores the rich connection between history, culture and food in South Africa, while aiming to inspire readers to delve outside their comfort zone and experiment with new flavors and tastes.

“I was inspired to create this cookbook as a way of embracing my South African roots in a way that resonates with who I am as an individual,” commented Chef Carstens. “I was born after the fall of Apartheid, as a member of the ‘born-free’ generation, I know how important it is to celebrate Freedom Day and the joy it brings with the rest of the world. Other people are facing racism, injustice, and oppression, and maybe our story (and our food) can help inspire them, and show them what’s possible.”

According to Chef Carstens, “A Taste of Freedom” aims to boost mood and be therapeutic through its delicious recipes. South Africans will recognize in its 27 recipes familiar dishes delivered in creative and interesting ways, side-by-side with new culinary experiences sure to excite. Other highlights of the cookbook include a glossary filled with fun terms in native South African complete with a cool pronunciation guide, and interesting tidbits of culture and history on each and every page.

Freedom Day, April 27th, transformed the country, with its black and colored people being liberated after decades of the worst kinds of oppression. This freedom was won through brave struggle and great sacrifice that should never be forgotten. For many South Africans its their favorite holiday, with celebrations being remarkably joyous and wonderful food never being far behind.

In addition to her work as a chef and author, Chef Carstens’s Cazlinn’s Kombuis, provides access to delicious and authentic South African inspired dishes through various channels and services. The primary mission of Cazlinn’s Kombuis is to promote the cultural impact and healing potential of food through various forms of content, interactive community engagement, and philanthropic initiatives.
