Sir Earl Toon invites the community to join him 1 p.m. – 7 p.m., Dec. 11, at the Give a Kid a Coat Celebration at 3015 @ Trinity Groves, 3015 Gulden Lane Dallas, TX 75212.
The party will feature a concert from Toon and other local artists, as well as games and interactive play. It will also serve as a collection point for Give a Kid a Coat, an organization co-founded by local business woman Carla Harrell, also known as the Rhinestone Artist, and Toon after she saw a student walking to school, on a cold day without a coat.
Toon, an inductee into the 2016 Grammy Hall of Fame, as the co-writer of “Celebration,” believes kids have the chance to excel and achieve more, when communities come together to support them. Since 2012, Give a Kid a Coat has provided more than 5,000 new coats to Dallas-area children.
The winter of 2016-2017 is shaping up to be exceptionally cold. The Farmer’s Almanac predicts North Texas to be “chilled-to-the-bone and wet.” At a minimum, 19 percent of Dallas residents are considered to be at poverty level; this versus 13.5 percent at the national level, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Dallas Independent School District reported approximately 3,600 of its students as homeless.
When poverty and homelessness are discussed, needs outside of hunger and shelter can be forgotten. Give a Kid a Coat is doing its part to raise awareness and make sure student warmth is not a concern for Dallas families this winter.
“I want to help as many children as possible,” Toon said. “There is great need all around us. Alone, I can only do so much, but as we join together as a community, I promise you, we’ll be successful and unstoppable!”
Give a Kid a Coat is accepting new coat donations in all children’s sizes for ages infant to 18 years old, at various locations around Dallas and Fort Worth. The organization is also looking for sponsors to help produce the Dec. 11 event.

Give a Kid a Coat was founded in 2012 by local business woman Carla Harrell, the Rhinestone Artist, and Grammy-Award-winner, Sir Earl Toon, to provide new coats to children in hardship situations. Earl Toon, Jr. has been making music and an impact for decades. He came to fame as part of the 2016 Grammy Hall of Fame inducted band, Kool & the Gang.
