Hemp-based CBD manufacturer Spring Creek Labs warns their fellow farmers the deadline to apply to the newest crop insurance program is March 16th.
While private insurance has been offering protection to hemp manufacturers for a while, this is the first time a nonprivate agency is reaching a hand out to the industry.
So what does a CBD manufacturer need to get accepted into the program? Farmers must meet all of the following requirements to be eligible.
One of the programs also requires applicants to have a processor contract. Deadlines for all acreage reporting is August 15th to be considered for the 2020 harvest season.
While this is a huge step in the right direction in terms of securing a stable source of hemp, the industry is still eager to see big changes made to regulations.
That pesky 0.3% THC limit? It isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. This gets even more complicated when factoring the requirement for decarboxylation before testing THC levels.
Decarboxylation requires private label hemp manufacturers to hemp to be heated. This releases carbon dioxide from the plant and allows the THC to be absorbed by the body.
It’s a more rigorous method of testing for THC not all US-based hemp manufacturers are prepared for. But that doesn’t leave agencies with no say over testing regulations. Current testing requirements for US-based CBD manufacturers is to test their crops within 15 days of harvest.
The safety net of this new insurance program will provide an increase in production. All while the testing labs maintain the same limited resources.
Officials are trying to get more solid numbers on how much these labs can handle. Until then they do have the power to loosen the 15-day restrictions to better suit the available testing resources.
