“The enthusiasm and support we have received for this project has been incredible,” says Liz Lozano-Lopez, Catholic Charities’ director of development.
The new building, said Catholic Charities Executive Director Jim Gannon in a release, will “provide a location for us to consolidate delivery of all of our services while enabling us to serve more individuals seeking our assistance.”
The group provides early childhood education, transportation for seniors, GED programs, housing assistance to lower income local residents, and support—as well as job placement—for refugees coming into New Mexico.
“Because we are Catholic Charities people think we are a Catholic organization that only helps Catholics,” says Lozano-Lopez.
“We serve anyone who is in need,” says Lozano-Lopez, “which means anyone is more than welcome to stop by.” Or to call: recently the group logged up to 100 telephone calls a day from hard-pressed residents seeking rental assistance.
Fund-raising for the facility is expected to continue at a brisk pace for the rest of this year, with first phase construction—pending city approval—starting in 2015. The new building will not only give the organization more space to do the many things it already does, but also to grow some of its essential services.
“We would very much like to expand the number of children we have in our early childhood learning center, which at last count was about 48. We want to almost triple that number and have at least 120 children learning at the center,” says Lozano-Lopez.
The new building will house offices, classrooms, storage rooms, stairwells, elevators and rest rooms. A 6-foot-high fence will border the perimeter of the site, with a 2-foot high concrete retaining wall on the south end of the property.
The exterior of the building will include space for a playground and parking.
