Whether their clients are interested in creating a prototype for an invention or improving their existing products, Form 3D offers a variety of technologies designed to do just that. They are proficient in direct metal laser sintering, fused deposition modeling, and 3-axis computer numerical control systems to shape and mold metal or plastic components into anything their clients need.
Direct Metal Laser Sintering
Direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) is a process through which thin layers of metal are laid on top of each other to create a component. Powdered metal is applied to a base, and a laser precisely melts it to the right temperature. Over time, a solid component results. This is just as easy as casting, but it produces results that mimic the quality of forging. High-temp alloys can be problematic in casting and machining, but not with DMLS.
Fused Deposition Modeling
Fused deposition modeling utilizes plastic to create lightweight components for a variety of industries. Plastic extrudes from a heated nozzle, which places the material onto a platform according to programming. Because the melt temperature and rate is so precise, the components build up one layer at a time. Clients can choose from a rainbow of colors and several types of plastic.
3-Axis Computer Numerical Control
3-axis computer numerical control is a milling process that allows Form 3D to customize parts to clients’ specifications. It is the process that allows the addition of mounting features, and it also allows for the “hollowing” of certain components that may have complex internal features but a smooth, machined outside surface.
