Hotel Direct are offering theatre breaks in London to see ‘South Pacific’ at the Barbican Theatre, London.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical returns to the West End after ten years away from the UK. ‘South Pacific’ opened on Broadway in 1949 and ran for five years. At the time, it was the fifth longest running Broadway show so was considered a huge success, not least because of the ten Tony awards it scooped up.

The production has since been to New York and London in short runs, but the 2008 Broadway revival is what has caused a great stir in theatre and resulted in seven more Tony awards and five Drama Desk awards. Now it’s coming to London’s West End before starting a much anticipated UK tour.

The musical is set in WWII so was very topical for its original audience; however the timeless songs and exploration of themes such as racial prejudice still resonate with audiences today. The romantic story is based on an island in the South Pacific and follows the journeys of two couples who find their love threatened by the war. The two main characters are Emile de Becque, a French plantation owner, and Nellie Forbush, a US Navy nurse, whose deep-seated racial prejudices threaten to ruin the love they have for each other.

Some of the popular tunes form the score include ‘Happy Talk’, ‘I’m Gonna Wash that man Right Outta my Hair’ and ‘Some Enchanted Evening’. With a cast of forty, a live orchestra of twenty five and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s original score, a vibrant, engaging and entertaining show can be expected.
