Black Cadillac, the feature debut of director/producer Michael Roud, will have its world premiere tonight, Monday, July 25 at 7:45pm at the Laemmle Sunset 5 Theaters in West Hollywood. Four other shorts will be screened as well, and a Q&A with all the directors, including Roud, will take place following the last film.

This feature is a potential qualifier for the 2012 Academy Awards.

A chance encounter with a slick-talking street salesman, the realization that he’s been had, and the desire to get justice however he can–thus Mike, Black Cadillac’s down-on-his-luck photographer protagonist, becomes an unlikely avenger, and so too did Michael Roud, his real-life counterpart and the movie’s writer and director, find the inspiration to make this genre-bending modern western cum morality tale. Two-plus years ago, when making movies was still just a long-harbored dream for Roud, he was conned into paying a large sum for a set of speakers that turned out bogus. Never one to play the fool, Roud became obsessed with tracking the seller down and having it out with him.
Improbably, he did so. The two ended up talking for some time–the man was a formerly religious huckster with a silver tongue and a roguish past–and the seed of inspiration was planted. Black Cadillac is Roud’s attempt to make sense of that human desire to get something for nothing–whether it’s a set of speakers or the secret to all one’s troubles–and how our received ideas about heaven, hell, God and the devil affect our decision-making, even when we’re not aware of it.

For his next film, Roud has sets his sights on a political thriller to be set and filmed on-location in Puerto Rico. “I want to focus on the intersection of U.S. and local culture,” Roud said. “I especially want to examine the separatist elements that remain despite pervasive Americanization.” And he still hasn’t lost his interest in why we do the things we do. According to Roud, the still-unnamed movie will also “investigate the media’s influence on modern culture, and on what we believe to be true.”
