In his award winning novel, Miracle Man, author William R. Leibowitz exposes Big Pharma’s efforts to sabotage Dr. Robert James Austin, the greatest genius in human history and the protagonist in the novel. Dr. Austin, the modern day superhero who has devoted his extraordinary intellect to finding cures for human ailments, is costing the pharmaceutical companies a fortune as his discoveries eliminate the need for an array of Big Pharma’s “cash-cow” drugs that treat, rather than cure.
As Austin’s success in finding cures escalates, so does Big Pharma’s desperation to destroy him. The CEOs of the five largest pharmaceutical companies hold a secret meeting at a remote estate in the Adirondack mountains of New York State to plan their offensive. Secure in their privacy, they lay out their tactics to derail Dr. Austin from making further progress on behalf of humankind.
Column McAlister, CEO of Bushings Pharmaceuticals, is blunt as he addressed his fellow moguls. “Robert James Austin is single handedly ruining our business and we need to be proactive and do something about it. If he keeps going on like he has –the only thing left for us to sell will be tampons and laxatives. Nobody knows who this guy is or where he came from. Some say he’s a mutuant. For all we know, he’s an alient. But who cares? He’s destroying our busines with his discoveries and he’s costing every man in this room a fortune. Austin’s our competitor and we have to beat him.”
The other CEOs couldn’t agree more as they make suggestions on how to sabotage the genius savior. “Undermine Austin’s credibility. Destroy his sainthood. One of us should get an investigation going into his personal life. There has to be some dirt somewhere”, says Lincoln Raynor, the patrician CEO of Tyler Drun. “Let’s also use our political connections to make the U.S. Justice Department launch an anti-trust suit against Austin’s non-profit drug company, Uniserve.”
Anthony Bello. CEO of Meyer Bessel Laboratories, is going to have his company use its FDA connections to pressure the FDA to slow down the approval process on Austin’s new meds. “The longer we can keep his stuff off the market, the more time we have to sell ours before he makes it obsolete.”
McAlister adds, “Ultimately, public perception is crucial. So i’ve met with one of our stratetic ad agencies about starting a ‘dis-information campaign’ against Austin to plant doubts in the public’s mind about his discoveries. The script is being written by our best guys. We’ll go viral with it. We can do some real damage.”
And that’s just the beginning of Big Pharma’s multi-faceted strategy to stifle Robert James Austin.
But Austin has other serious and determined foes too —rabid anti-Western radicals; an obsessive government leader; and most alarmingly, forces that are more powerful than even Austin can understand.
