Miami Film Month 2016

Florida has a rich film history. Maybe it’s because of the perennial sunshine and mild weather, or perhaps it’s due to the wide variety of interesting locations, but Florida’s film industry is one of the most productive in the United States. During the month of June, the city of Miami showcases this cultural resource with Miami Film Month.

There are several art house cinemas throughout Miami that show documentaries, independent films and even blockbusters. During Miami Film Month, these unique venues offer something for every taste. Miami Beach Cinematheque, or MBC, is located in the historic Miami Beach City Hall at the center of the South Beach Art Deco District. MBC features a renovated screening room, a gallery, a bookstore and library and a café. Nosh on popcorn and sandwiches while you experience the heart of film culture in Miami Beach.

O Cinema, in the hip Wynwood Arts District, focuses on showing first-run indie, art, foreign and niche flicks. The cozy space takes visitors back to a time when viewing a film was still an intimate experience. The luckiest guests can snag a spot on the front-row couch.

Tower Theater was one of the first silent movie houses in South Beach. Now, it features multicultural films. It’s located in Little Havana, tucked between restaurants and cigar lounges.

During Miami Film Month

The Women’s International Film & Arts Festival, or WIFF, will hold a conference from June 3 – 5. Emerging and established professionals in the industry can attend to learn more about the art and industry of independent cinema. It’s an ideal event to kick off the month. Those interested in networking with other film and entertainment buffs can surround themselves with like-minded individuals here.

People who visit during Miami Film Month will want to stay at the center of the action. The Art Deco District lies in the heart of South Beach, and the MBC is its focal point. Staying at an art deco hotel here will add to the artsy vibe that defines a trip to Miami Film Month. The iconic Beacon Hotel South Beach on Ocean Drive is right around the corner from the MBC and a short distance away from many other art house cinemas. The oceanfront accommodations in this historic South Beach hotel allow guests to feel like royalty while they scope out the cultural scene throughout the city.
