Autism Educator for First Responders is excited to announce the launch of the dynamic & engaging e-course Autism De-escalation Matters to First Responders in recognition of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.

Autism De-escalation Matters to First Responders uses role-play scenarios along with the CARES and HELP methods – developed from law enforcement & mental health collaboration to build a custom non-violent, no contact Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) that focuses on:

  • Diversity to Save Lives
  • Equity to Build Partnerships and
  • Inclusion to Strengthen Communities!

Autism De-escalation Matters to First Responders is a new evidence-based, data-collecting  Autism Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) built by the 501(c)3 organization ETTI to support Police Reform Bill, H.R.2457 – National De-Escalation of Violence and Community Safety Training Act of 2019 & Bill S.3985 – The JUSTICE Act!

Police violence ignited protests and called for de-escalation reform nationwide this year. De-escalation training for those with Autism, IDD & other impairments is gaining new prominence among first responders and winning over skeptics who once thought de-escalation training would put them at risk.

“I had physical contact with a student with erratic behavior while teaching in a college computer lab. Non-violent, verbal & non-verbal de-escalation was essential to my safety, the safety of the other students in the lab and the future success of the student. I was able to communicate with the student to avoid the incident becoming an event that could harm all parties involved.” Dr. Sharlene T Smith, Autism Educator for First Responders.

This dynamic and engaging training will help First Responders to:

  • Dramatically decrease use-of-force incidents and injuries to citizens, officers & all first responders during a crisis situation and join the nationwide De-escalation Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) reform this year!
  • Actively avoid mistakes that can lead to potential lawsuits, loss of confidence from the community, morale issues, and lifelong trauma for all involved. Confidently de-escalate a potentially dangerous situation with the Autism community. While avoiding frustrations, violence & protests!
  • Build leadership skills, self- assurance and positive image to empower and transform to a positive community perspective.

The official launch date for the Autism De-escalation Matters to First Responders e-Course is 03/01/2021 in recognition of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.

Since 1987, March has been recognized as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. In 1987, President Ronald Reagan issued a public declaration urging Americans to provide individuals with developmental disabilities “the encouragement and opportunities they need to lead productive lives and to achieve their full potential.”

Founder, Dr. Smith’s daughter was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder at the age of 3. Her autism behaviors & mistaken mannerisms have led to violence, fleeing, and harm of others. They have had the great fortune of avoiding handcuffs because of the Crisis Intervention Teams (CIT) and techniques taught and implemented by our public-school & community support team.

Testimonials from the course review are positive and motivating with students saying: I feel the information is so beneficial not only to First Responders but everyone in the world. I really feel people need more guidance in life and this is a wonderful course that can actually Save Lives, Build Partnerships and Strengthen Communities if you apply what’s taught and let it sink in. Dr. Jennifer Lee.
