Arizona’s Family Allergy Clinic Helps Kids Overcome Eczema with Allergy Immunotherapy Drops

As many as 18 percent of children suffer with the itchy, red skin rash known as eczema, but relief can be elusive. Topical creams and antihistamines only help temporarily, so the rash usually returns. According to a Phoenix physician, though, the key to lasting relief is to address the source of the rash which is often an underlying allergy. Dr. Stuart Agren has successfully treated thousands of young eczema sufferers using a kid-friendly, under-the-tongue alternative to allergy shots.

Dr. Agren prescribes the treatment, known as sublingual immunotherapy (or SLIT), at the Family Allergy Clinic near Phoenix, Arizona. SLIT is taken as drops under the tongue that absorb into the bloodstream through cells in the mouth. The drops help the body develop an immunity to common allergy triggers such as pollen, molds, dust, and pet dander.

Dr. Agren said there is a strong link between eczema in Phoenix and allergies.

“Eczema is often just one more manifestation of allergy,” said Agren. “Treating the allergic disease at its source is often the key to stopping the cycle of recurring eczema.”

Agren said that most of his eczema patients also suffer with food or pollen allergies and display additional symptoms such as asthma or hay fever.

While allergy shots can’t usually be safely prescribed for kids under age 7, allergy drops have been shown to be safe for kids less than 5, allowing Agren to help young eczema sufferers.

“Eczema knows no minimum age. Even babies can have severe eczema,” said Agren.

Dr. Agren said it is rewarding to help young eczema patients regain their quality of life.

“One of my 5-year-old patients had been covered with eczema since infancy,” said Agren. “He had the rash year round, but it was especially bad during pollen season when he would scratch it until his skin bled and became infected.”

The boy’s pediatrician had prescribed over two dozen creams and medications, but it wasn’t until he started on the Family Allergy Clinic drops that his symptoms subsided. Within three months, he was down to one or two small patches of eczema.

The drops’ safety profile also allows them to be taken at home (unlike shots which must be administered at the doctor’s office). And since the drops are made up of natural ingredients, they are free of the side effects of steroid creams and other synthetic medications.
