Oscar’s Place, a 501c3 non-profit foundation, is a donkey adoption center and sanctuary in Northern California Wine Country. The ranch provides a safe haven for abandoned and abused donkeys that were destined to be slaughtered and was founded by renowned LA Pop Art dealer and gallery owner Phil Selway. In recent years, donkey hides have seen a dramatic spike in demand due to their popular use in Chinese medicine. This led to an entire industry built on donkeys being auctioned off, brutally slaughtered, and cut up for their hides, as reported by CNN and The Guardian.

“Donkeys are so much more like pet dogs than farm livestock,” explains Ron King, Executive Director of Oscar’s Place and former Senior Vice President for the NYC-based media conglomerate Time Inc., “They crave human attention, form extremely strong bonds with other donkeys and their caretakers, and love to play with their donkey friends.” The family foundation has rescued several donkeys from slaughter and is seeking to collaborate with animal rights influencers, donkey lovers, and people who care about animals to educate the public on donkeys and provide donations for the rescued equines on the ranch at this time.

“We are rescuing these poor animals, helping them recover physically and emotionally, and ultimately find their forever homes. Donkeys are in high demand both as pets and faithful herd protectors.” states King. Oscar’s Place nurtures abused donkeys and aims to rebuild the animals’ trust before introducing them to their new caretakers. The team at Oscar’s Place is committed to only adopting out donkeys that are ready both physically and emotionally, thereby placing animal welfare above all. “It is important to us that these loving animals find an equally loving home,” states King.

“That means we don’t just send out animals as soon as they come in. In order to provide our donkeys the care they deserve, we give them ample time to recover and get to know their caretakers on our ranch in Hopland,” so King. The non-profit organization is being funded by donations and collaborations with donors and brands. “I would love to get super creative about ways that we can partner. Painting one of my barns with your logo, decals on tractors or trailers, naming a donkey or pasture,” explains King, “The possibilities are only limited by our imagination!” For more information, or to donate to Oscar’s Place today, visit: oscarsplace.org
