Escuela del Sol, one of New Mexico’s most succesful independent schools will be renovating its campus, which includes “The Harwood” a beloved local art center.  The school is located at 1114 7th street, about 1/2 mile from downtown. The school is raising a “seed fund” of a half a million from private funders, with a cost in the “multi-millions.”

The project will impact nearly an entire block, creating construction jobs near the downtown core.

The school, which has upwards of 200 students, has just sent an invitation in early January for qualified architectural firms to develop a master plan for the block-size campus.  A phased plan will likely be developed after the master plan has been accepted.

Escuela owns the Harwood Building and all of the original buildings were a part of the school, as well as the corner of 6th and Mountain Road, a building referred to as Studio South.

The master plan is envisioned to be a “community anchor, particularly for our intersecting neighborhoods of Downtown, Wells Park, and Saw Mill, and a ‘Green Urban Oasis,’ an environment built to reflect ur mission, support our diverse programs and plans for growth, and serve as a model for a more sustainable and planet-friendly business/community.”

An architect to oversee the master plan is expected to be brought on by early March.
