The Volunteer Firefighter Alliance (VFA), an advocate of volunteer firefighting departments nationwide, recently donated a fire truck to a local volunteer fire department in Alabama that was devastated by a tornado in March 2021, according to VFA Executive Director Alan Bohms.

The twister, which was a category F-2 one, struck Clay County on March 25. The tornado ended up destroying the Hollins Volunteer Fire & Rescue building and even shifted its foundation. The storm also annihilated the department’s three fire engines and obliterated most of the firefighters’ protective wear.

In light of the severe damage sustained, the VFA decided to donate a 1988 Spartan Rescue Pumper truck to the department to help to restore its vital operations in the Clay County community. This is the third fire truck donated to the department since the spring storm. The firefighter alliance also donated $20,000 to the department a week after the storm to cover the cost of building repairs and equipment replacement following the tornado.

Individuals who would like to donate to Hollins Volunteer Fire & Rescue can also do this through the department’s GoFundMe page.

Prior to the storm, 12 firefighters worked for the volunteer fire department, which served 120-plus homes, businesses, and churches across Clay County. With the help of the VFA and other donors, the county fire department should be well equipped to continue serving its community in the months and years ahead, according to Alan Bohms.

In addition to donating resources to important causes in the firefighting industry, the VFA is passionate about offering volunteer firefighters free discounts, quarterly newsletters, and accidental death and dismemberment benefits through its membership program. The VFA also operates its Response Recovery Program, which helps firefighters to successfully bill for emergency services.
