African-American-owned Thomas Home Group, a leading residential painting contractor, is announcing the launch of TAP – the Thomas Apprenticeship Program, to train young people and help create local job opportunities. The company is raising $500K in a GoFundMe campaign to finance a new facility for their tradesman training academy. The first location will be in Charlotte, NC, with the second planned for Florence, SC. Donors can contribute at https://gofund.me/6d1cf49f.
Owner Jeremy Thomas says the mission of TAP is to provide cabinet painting and technician training so young people can become certified cabinet refinishing professionals. “This program will have the apprentices learn from start to finish what’s required for achieving high-quality, factory-finish cabinets,” he says.
Future plans call for offering additional tradesman courses including plumbing, residential electrical, and carpentry. Upon completion of the program, the apprentices – primarily high school seniors and recent high school graduates – will be equipped with a skilled trade they can always rely on for gainful employment. Thomas Home Group is partnering with other local contractors so that graduates can be placed in jobs within their field of study.
The concept behind TAP is important to Thomas because he says there are no facilities in the Charlotte region that offer the precise type of program TAP does. “Really what we want to do is tap into these young people’s potential now,” he says.
“Our vision is to arm these apprentices with marketable skills so they can go on to do anything in life,” Thomas says, “especially because many young people don’t know what they want to do, and college isn’t necessarily for everyone. The world needs skilled tradesmen as well. In fact, the world was built on the backs of trade careers.”
Thomas’ larger goal is to impact his community. “We’re looking to provide stable careers right here in Charlotte,” he says, “which will lead to lower unemployment rates, people having enriched, fulfilling lives, and more importantly, a real sense of purpose. That way, young people can control their own narratives.”
“This isn’t about me, it’s about all of us. In order to produce certified professionals who can flourish just like I have in this business, it’s important to not just talk about change, I want to be the change.”
