CIPP developed in the early 1970s. At the time it was a truly innovative method of pipe repair. Once CIPP development had reached its final form, it was time to calculate its longevity. Estimated figures guessed the life expectancy of the materials used. The estimate of 50 years fared well against the expectancy of the original pipes. The long lifespan meant CIPP was considered a great alternative to traditional pipe repair. With any such hypothesis, only time can determine its accuracy. Recent studies reassessed this initial time estimate.
Reaching the Original Estimate
As of now, the initial CIPP lines installed are close to reaching this 50-year mark. And to everyone’s pleasant surprise, they’re doing great! Measurements taken every five years compare some of these original installations to test real-life examples against the original calculations. Why are the pipes doing so well?
Original Guidelines
The ASTM guidelines were developed to assess the CIPP lining process. The guidelines took several factors into account, including bury depth, live load, dead load, original pipe trench width, and type of soil. A safety factor number of a conservative 2 was determined. Since the technology was untested, the engineers decided to double the required thickness of the CIPP wall lining just to be safe. Since this time, tens of thousands of miles of CIPP lining have been laid in the ground.
Outstanding Results
Tests conducted over the decades have assessed the actual performance compared to the original calculations. The resulting numbers are consistently much higher than expected. In certain examples, the numbers from the 30-year mark were actually higher than the figures taken at the 20-year mark. This material is holding stronger than anyone expected. And the original expectations were pretty great.
