It has been a banner season for Leonard Dozier, the actor/voice actor/singer-songwriter, who became a new voice for “Fox Sports,” while also being nominated for “Outstanding Body of Work in a Career” by the Society of Voice Arts and Sciences, also known as the Academy Awards for voice actors. Among the other luminaries who have been nominated for the SOVAS awards are President Barack Obama, Jamie Fox, and Stacey Abrams.
Dozier recently narrated the only official biography of Richard Allen, the founder of the AME church. This volume, which will be published by Penguin Random House in February, “cemented a storied collection of my work about Mr. Allen, which included voicing an animation project about him this past summer,” said Dozier. The voice actor’s animation took place a mere three weeks after undergoing diaphragmatic plication surgery.
His new holiday single (“Christmas Kind of Way”) has just been released and is currently on the Smooth Jazz Holiday Charts.
Even more important and meaningful, Dozier said, was his teaming up with Darrell Salk — son of one of the 20th century’s most-prominent physicians and architect of the first polio vaccine, Jonas Salk — and a physician in his own right. The two are donating some $1000-$1200 to purchase Christmas gifts for the all the students of Dozier’s childhood elementary school, North Main Street School. in Pleasantville, N.J., where he graduated in 1993. In addition, Dozier is selecting the actual gifts for the students.
A Seattle-based physician, Salk became friends with Dozier when he joined one of the actor’s voice over classes. When Dozier suggested pooling donations to provide Christmas gifts for the school, Salk’s response was: “Throw me into the ring.” Also “ecstatic” was North Main Street School principal Teresa McGaney-Guy.
“It’s amazing how much giving heals,” said Dozier. “My surgery was to correct a congenital condition in which I have a paralyzed diaphragm and compromised left lung. Never knew it. The surgery was unsuccessful and the recovery tough, but God has given me a great life and career, and if I can share just a bit of that with the kids in an elementary school that meant so much to me, my heart will be overjoyed.”
