Continuing its’ success since the first series in 2021, the UniPin Ladies Series returns this year. Aside from placing the professional teams in the spotlight, the UniPin Ladies Series which opens this June will also provide a competitive scene for amateur players and teams to compete on the international stage.
Due to the pandemic that required people to stay at home, the audience began to show more interest in gaming and increases their play time. According to a survey by IDC, 63% of their respondents reported increased gameplay times, especially in the countries that were hit hard by COVID-19. The same survey showed that 6% of mobile gamers had never played mobile games before the pandemic. The increase in the number of gamers demands that the industry, including UniPin, facilitate them in developing more of their talents to be able to compete on a higher competitive scale.
Aside from UniPin Ladies Series as the highest level of competition in women-only category, UniPin also provides another tournament to develop the talents of amateur and emerging female gamers, which is the UniPin Ladies Development Series. Debora Imanuella, SVP of UniPin Community explained that she is very enthusiastic about this tournament and eager to see regeneration in the scene of ladies esports.
“Through ULDS, we want to give amateur female gamers the same opportunity to be in a competition. We don’t just do tournaments for big teams, but we also give space for self-improvement for new teams out there and create a regeneration opportunity for ladies’ players. I can’t wait to see new faces to be able to compete at a higher professional level,” said Debora.
The ULDS regular season will last for two weeks, and the best teams from the regular season will compete in the playoffs which will be held for one week. Just like other ladies’ series matches, ULDS will be conducted with a global ban pick system where heroes that have been used in the previous game can no longer be used in the next game in the same match.
The Importance of Ladies Tournament
Public interest especially female gamers towards esports are expected to increase in 2023. This encourages the industry players to create even more tournaments to keep up with this increasing number. Debora Imanuella, SVP of UniPin Community explained the importance of UniPin Ladies Series as a tournament initiated by UniPin, as a place for female gamers to hone their skills and show off their talent.
“Southeast Asia is home to 250 million mobile gamers, with the largest market being in Indonesia which has almost the same number of female gamers as men. However, most of these players have only played mobile games without ever competing professionally. Therefore, women-only tournaments are very important so that women become familiar with the competitive scene. With this, we hope that they become more ready to compete and excel at the national and international level,” said Debora.
