Widely regarded as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, Lucien Freud was famed for his detailed, realistic and sometimes unnerving portraits of his family, friends, fellow artists, well-known public figures and, of course, himself. Now, roughly seventy years after he first rose to prominence on the international art scene, the National Portrait Gallery in central London presents an extensive collection of his finest works – including some which have never been on public display before.

Among the portraits visitors will be able to peruse in what is the most far-reaching Freud exhibition in over a decade are likenesses of people such as Freud’s mother Lucie, brigadier Andrew Parker Bowles and contemporaries Francis Bacon, David Hockney and Frank Auerbach. Promoted as part of the Cultural Olympiad’s London 2012 Festival, Portraits carefully tracks the painter’s artistic development and painstakingly includes examples of every different kind of portrait Freud drew throughout his lengthy career. Discussing the exhibition, curator Sarah Howgate noted how the artist maintained close relationships throughout his life with people from a wide range of classes and ethnicities, and that the show was intended to reflect this.

Freud passed away in July of last year but before he died was heavily involved in the planning of this exhibition. The display, therefore, is a truly fitting memorial to this hugely influential man.
