Widely regarded as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, Lucien Freud was famed for his detailed, realistic and sometimes unnerving portraits of his family, friends, fellow artists, well-known public figures and, of course, himself. Now, roughly seventy years after he first rose to prominence on the international art scene, the National Portrait Gallery in central London presents an extensive collection of his finest works – including some which have never been on public display before.

Discussing the exhibition, curator Sarah Howgate noted how the artist maintained close relationships throughout his life with people from a wide range of classes and ethnicities, and that the show was intended to reflect this.

Freud passed away in July of last year but before he died was heavily involved in the planning of this exhibition. The display, therefore, is a truly fitting memorial to this hugely influential man.
