Car hire comparison site Carrentals.co.uk has found that travellers prefer to seek advice on what the etiquette is when it comes to tipping rather than what festivities and festivals are available to them on their impending foreign holiday.
Research carried out by the car hire UK company questioned more than 1,000 online users about their travel needs. Tipping stood out as being the most important thing to know about for Brits when jetting off abroad.
The results were indicative of some European countries preferring people not to tip, while many places rely on tipping to pay waiting staff’s wages. Travellers’ worries ensue when they are not sure if they should tip, should not tip or indeed how much to tip – especially if there is a service charge added already.
Carrentals.co.uk Managing Director, Gareth Robinson, commented: “Previously I have left a 15% tip at a restaurant and received a frosty reception from the waiter – and it seems a lot of UK travellers are just as unsure of what is expected when it comes to paying for food. The USA for instance expects a 15-20% tip although some European waiters may give you an odd look for over-paying. It’s something we’re adding detail to our site about to help people know what to tip and where.”
“It happens in hotels, taxis and restaurants, and people are more likely to enjoy their holiday if they feel comfortable in knowing what they should pay. The survey showed that travellers are more interested in knowing this than any legal issues or current affairs that country is having.”
The car rental site, Carrentals.co.uk, has won awards for providing the UK public with comparison deals from major hire car suppliers such as Sixt, Budget, Alamo, Holiday Autos and Auto Europe, and has succeeded in delivering 650,000 orders to date.
