April 27, 2015 Ed Mazria of Architecture 2030 Signs Charter Making Albuquerque the 10th 2030 District across the globe alongside Dallas, Denver, Toronto, Seattle, others.
Albuquerque, NM (PRUnderground) April 27th, 2015
The Charter Signing will take place today, April 27, in Downtown Albuquerque and will be followed by a community celebration, open to the public, at the Hotel Andaluz rooftop bar at 5:15 pm this evening.
Large Albuquerque city center property owners will lead the charge to massively reduce water, energy, and transportation emissions within a new 2030 District in Albuquerque’s city center by the year 2030.
The 2030 District model was developed by Ed Mazria and his team at Architecture 2030, and is making waves as far away as China, where Mazria recently traveled to support an efffort there that, like 2030 Districts, is voluntary, and private sector led.
In Albuquerque the University of New Mexico (UNM), Central New Mexico Community College, Presbyterian Hospital and many other property owners from UNM to downtown are committing hundreds of thousands of square footage to the District.
“It’s great to see Albuquerque joining this network of innovative cities, as it commits to dramatic reductions in water and energy consumption, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions,” says Ed Mazria. As the first District in the southwest, he sees it has having special importance.
“The Southwest has always been a center for solar energy, as well as energy and water efficient buildings,” he says.
“With our unique high desert climate we’re well aware of our abundant sunlight, propensity for drought, and the importance of conserving our water resources. Given these issues, Albuquerque is a welcome addition to the 2030 Districts Network where it can become a model for other cities in our region.”
