Aurora, Colorado VA Hospital Construction in Army Corps of Engineer Hands says Construction Reporter

The $1.7 billion Veterans Administration hospital in Aurora, Colorado which drew criticism for delays and overspending will be overseen now by the Army Corps of Engineers

The proposed 182-bed Colorado facility is now set to be completed by some time in 2017. It was originally projected to open in April of 2015, and the initial cost was projected for $630 million. Though delayed, thankfull the project will still happen, creating a multitude of construction jobs in the region.
Three other VA projects have been in the news recently due to having fallen behind significantly on construction schedules and with a price tag much higher than initially projected. Those include a $665 million new VA hospital in Orlando which was $362 over budget, and a VA hospital in Las Vegas that ended up costing more than $1 billion. A hospital in New Orleans had a cost of $1.5 billion.
The VA had already initiated two proactive measures to address these issues–a Construction Review Council, and a new delivery method called Integrated Design and Construction. However, neither of these measures took effect in time to impact these four costly projects.
Some contractors are now hesitant to even bid on VA projects, due to bad experiences in the past because of slow time tables and a burdensome process. A congressional probe into these and other projects is hoped to address systemic problems in the agency.
