After several false starts, it appears the Hayden Flour Mill, one of the iconic historic buildings in Tempe, Arizona, will be redeveloped by Chicago-based firm Baum Development, which specializes in historic and adaptive reuse projects. The project is sure to generate many construction jobs.
One notable earlier effort was Anheuser-Busch’s concept during the 1996 Super Bowl in Tempe to have the mill’s silos painted to look like a giant six-pack of Budweiser. Looking back, the city can be thankful it did not go that route.
The Mill is a beloved landmark in Tempe.
“It’s pretty much the symbolic center of the city,” says David Nakagawara, the City of Tempe’s Development Director. “The mill is basically where the city started, on the banks of the Salt River, and the first thing you see when you come into town.”
When it was operational, the mill ground flour for decades, as much as 500,000 pounds a day and more when it was owned by the Bay State Milling Company from 1981 to 2000. The original mill, which was destroyed in a fire, dates back to 1874.
“We’re very excited about all of this,” says Nakagawara, who notes that the project “has the potential of not only bringing new life to an important property here, but will also be a great asset to all of downtown Tempe.”
