Security threats are often thought of as being external issues. Home and business owners often spend thousands of dollars to reinforce and alarm entry points to prevent intruders from wreaking havoc. Recent events show that the biggest threats to personal safety sometimes come from inside, and they aren’t always noticeable without the right technology.
In early 2022, two people were found unconscious at the La Grange Quality Suites Hotel. They were affected by a carbon monoxide leak that happened on the premises. Police officials at the time said the levels reported by the fire department’s detectors were so high that a complete evacuation of the building was necessary.
During the evacuation, first responders found a third person exhibiting the signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure.
The most common symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are nausea, dizziness, and headaches. People can also experience shortness of breath, hallucinations, fatigue, drowsiness, confusion, abdominal pain, heart palpitations, and seizures. Immediate interventions are necessary after exposure.
Most carbon monoxide poisoning issues develop from indoor charcoal grills, gasoline-powered generators, and fires.
At the beginning of 2022, only 14 states required carbon monoxide detectors in motels and hotels. Kentucky is not one of them.
The state does require this equipment to be installed in new one or two-family homes, townhomes with fewer than three stories, dorms, childcare facilities, dorms, and assisted living facilities with an attached garage or a fuel-burning appliance.
Over 200 people per year experience carbon monoxide poisoning in Kentucky. Jefferson County Fire Service spokesperson Jordan Yuodis says that a detector can help to prevent injuries and deaths.
“Carbon monoxide is odorless, colorless – you can’t taste it, can’t see it,” said Yuodis. “It’s known as the silent killer because it is the silent killer.
The fastest way to manage this personal safety and security solution is to install a wireless smoke and carbon monoxide detector in each room. By forcing the silent killer to have a voice, it becomes easier to avoid dire outcomes.
