Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada (PRUnderground) January 26th, 2022
Everything in this world comes with an expiry date. Likewise, each roofing material comes with a limited time. After which roofs tend to wear. If you are someone who has a cedar roof installed at your home, you don’t have to worry about replacing it until it is twenty years from the time of installation. Cedar roofs are known for their long life. However, what if it reaches its end of life? That’s when you opt for cedar conversion. And it is a complex process. What do you need to know about the conversion process?
We approached ALPINEROOFS.CA, a 2022 ThreeBestRated® award-winning roofing company in Nanaimo, to learn about the cedar conversion process.
“A cedar roof conversion is when we have to replace an old cedar roof with a new asphalt shingle once the Cedar has reached the end of its lifespan. The average cedar roof will last approximately for 18 to 22 years in Nanaimo.”, says Kelly Matthews, owner of Alpineroofs.ca. He goes on to explain the steps involved in it. He says, “Cedar is installed on slats initially, so after ripping off the old Cedar and inspecting the slats, now quite often the slats don’t line up with the plywood. So it has to be moved. It is a normal part of doing a cedar conversion and we don’t charge by the board foot to move strapping, although a lot of other companies do.”
He further breaks down the process, “We then install 1/2 plywood sheeting over the slats (necessary to nail the new asphalt shingles to). Then we use ice and water shields in the valleys as well as the perimeter (bottom three feet). And also install a 24′ metal valley, then we install synthetic underlay over the entire roof, then the shingles, lastly, we vent the roof to meet or exceed code.”
