Times Ticking Watch Repair Shop Warns Summer Vacationers that Water-resistance has Limits

Seth Thompson of Times Ticking says that he frequently repairs watches compromised by water damage when their owners assumed that their “water-resistance” could handle full submersion in a pool, lake, or ocean. “Water-resistant does not mean waterproof, and most watches are not waterproof.”

Thompson explained that most wristwatches come with an ATM (atmosphere) rating that indicates their water-resistance. He said that many watches fall into the category of 3 ATM, which only holds up to handwashing and light splashes, or 5 ATM, which can handle showering or a quick submersion. It is only at the 10 ATM point (usually a much more expensive timepiece) that a watch can be submerged for an extended period. But Thompson cautioned that even then, the watch could still flood.

“Watches are tested in a controlled environment, but when you take them into real-life situations, they may not hold up as well,” said Thompson.

Thompson warned that those enjoying water activities this summer should check their watch’s depth rating and proceed with caution or face a potential watch repair or replacement.
