21-year-old productivity expert Filipa Canelas is announcing the launch of her new book, Around Is Forward: The Productivity Cycle Behind Extraordinary Results, August 1.
The book aims to help readers pile up meaningful accomplishments, particularly if they’re stuck in “doing” mode, find it hard to consistently outperform themselves, and are still relying on to-do lists.
Around Is Forward, a blueprint for when the goal is climbing the corporate ladder, jumpstarting a business, or capturing more free time, presents how the mastery of five sequenced phases can lead to extraordinary results in just a short period. Canelas reveals a handful of strategies: Planning, Organizing, Producing, Managing, and Upgrading, and explores the repeatable cycle of productivity that rejects to-do lists and the hustle mentality.
Canelas differentiates herself from other productivity experts with her assertion that productivity is not a matter of getting it done, but getting the right things done. “Productivity is often mistaken for working additional hours. But that is the formula for burnout, not productivity.”
“What’s also important to bear in mind,” she says, “is that success is a repeatable system, and not a lucky shot. Furthermore, consistency, not talent, is what differentiates people.”
Canelas frames productivity as a choice people can make consistently. “Productivity is not a one-time application,” she says, “By demonstrating commitment to the successive phases of the cycle, people can achieve productivity levels that may pleasantly surprise them.”
Canelas also warns readers to avoid relying on to-do lists, because they misrepresent what the priorities are. ”To-do lists are inherently flawed, in that they don’t differentiate between random tasks and significant responsibilities,” she says, “Address your priorities first, because your to-dos can wait.”
The author credits her ability to focus as the driver behind her producing content and building a meaningful platform around performance. “Most people focus too much on doing, but not enough on doing it with high levels of focus, even though focus is what provides the edge,” she says.
“Focus got me excellent grades as a Master’s student in my business program, even though I was able to spend less time studying. In my professional career, again, focus allowed me to create online courses in a short time.”
