Nine new cars have received Euro NCAP’s top five star ratings in their crash testing.

The nine models that received top marks are the Vauxhall Ampera, Hyundai i40, Citroen DS5, Chevrolet Orlando and Aveo, Volkswagen Jetta and Cabriolet, Audi A6 and BMW X3.

The Kia Picanto was also tested but received a four star rating. This was due to the Electronic Stability Control not being fitted on the model on sale in Europe. The ESC comes as standard in the UK and Euro NCAP feel a feature like this should be included on all models.

Chevrolet made a turn around with this year’s checks as last time the Aveo was tested in 2006, it only scored 2 stars. This is good news for the American manufacturer as these scores do undoubtedly affect consumers’ choices in which cars to buy.

Car manufacturers should bear in mind the criteria if they want to achieve top scores in the future as the testing requirements are said to be getting harder: the main aspect being the child occupant protection tests and pedestrian protection criteria becoming stricter.

Euro NCAP are an organisation that provide safety performance data for consumers on popular cars. Their data is often used in the development of newer models, making them safer and more reliable for consumers.
