Purchasing wheelchair accessibility vehicles isn’t quite as easy as choosing out a regular car, but with these handy tips and things to consider from Brotherwood Automobility, you should be well on your way.

Consider entry and exit of the vehicle. Do you want to get out of your chair into an adapted seat or do you want stay seated within your chair in the car. If you choose an option where you stay seated in your wheelchair, which many prefer there are things to consider such as how well secure the chair is, visibility and the comfort of the ride.

The positioning of the passenger and wheelchair is very important, if not lowered to a level similar to the driver then the ride may be uncomfortable. You also want to be in a position on a level with the other passengers to make your ride more enjoyable in terms of communication.

Dimensions are extremely important when it comes to choosing your vehicle as not every wheelchair has the same dimensions. When looking at potential cars you need to know your total height, total width and total length. These dimensions are very important to consider when looking at the entry height of a particular vehicle and its internal headroom.

The main decisions you will be making will be in terms of the wheelchair user, but there are certain points to consider for the driver. Is the loading process simple and is there any assistance like a winch? Do you like the look of the vehicle and will it fit in your garage? Additional seating, power steering, air con and transmission are all worth taking aboard.

All vehicles including, wheelchair accessible vehicles are an expensive purchase so not only do you have to consider the mentioned factors, but the price also needs to be considered. Do you outright purchase a new vehicle or consider a finance plan? Or do you purchase a used mobility car? If the period you need the vehicle for is only short term, why not consider hiring or leasing a vehicle?
