The Seattle Drug Treatment Centers Want to Reach Out to Those with a Dual Diagnosis of PTSD and Substance Abuse in Seattle, Washington

The Seattle Drug Treatment Centers have initiated a mental health and wellness campaign to promote the changes to the ACA contained within the Mental Health Parity Act and encourage those with an addiction and mental disorder such as PTSD to seek treatment. 

The time has come for those living with a dual diagnosis of PTSD and addiction in the Seattle, Washington metropolitan area to finally receive proper treatment for both their mental health disorder and drug dependency issues. Problems in the US Department of Veteran’s Affairs hospital system have left many veterans with a lack of confidence in the treatment available for their disorder.  Many of those who are aware of their issue, look to drugs or alcohol to subdue their condition because in fear of possibly of turning themselves over to a failing health system. Over time this can lead to abuse and drug dependency.  Veterans and other victims of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), deserve treatment, but many are unsure of the approach that will offer them the most success.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is categorized as a mental disorder by SAHMSA and other health associations.  Even though individuals with PTSD only account for a small percentage of abuse and trauma victims, they unfortunately experience the more extreme symptoms. These symptoms include, but are not limited to, anxiety, sleeplessness, traumatic flashbacks, and strong negative beliefs about life or one’s self.

The ACA and subsequent parity acts created new options of hospitalization for drug addiction, drug dependency, alcoholism and dual diagnosis for the providers offering mental health credits.  There are also new Medicaid regulations that allow drug treatment and treatment for other addiction and mental health disorders.  The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act “…requires insurance groups which offer coverage for mental health and substance use disorders to provide the same level of benefits that they do for general medical treatment.”  As a result, those suffering from addiction, substance abuse or a mental disorder can access beneficial treatment to begin their path towards a positive change.  This will open doors to dual diagnosis treatment for addiction and PTSD under insurance providers that cover mental health issues and for the Medicaid recipients.

The Seattle Drug Treatment Centers’ new campaign for PTSD and dual diagnosis will direct its’ efforts towards bringing awareness to the area’s veteran population, rape crisis centers, and battered women’s advocacy groups.  The Centers’ goal is to provide the public with knowledge that will not only help them to better understand what a diagnosis of PTSD means, but also inform victims of how to find a treatment program that meets their insurance and financial requirements. It is important that the public is made aware of the ACA’s new parity regulations governing addiction and chronic mental health disorders so that they can find treatment to reverse any issues relating to trauma or drug dependency.

Many service members face such critical issues as trauma, suicide, homelessness, and/or involvement with the criminal justice system. Approximately 18.5% of service members returning from Iraq or Afghanistan have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or depression, and 19.5% report experiencing a traumatic brain injury (TBI) during deployment.”
