Today The Hope-JG Foundation joins a growing list of ALS organizations, families and advocates to endorse the patient-driven #by2021 initiative which calls for the ALS Association to set a deadline to have a cure by 2021.
“We are honored to join the growing family of individuals and organizations uniting with the #by2021 initiative.” said John Gregoire, Co-Founder of The Hope-JG Foundation. “Awareness of ALS was raised in the public consciousness with last year’s Ice Bucket Challenge. It will come to the forefront again this August with the new challenge. We stand along side Chris Rosati and #by2021 in asking the national ALS Association for the ALSA to publicly commit to finding a cure by 2021.”
#by2021 began when Chris Rosati, who suffers from ALS, challenged the ALSA Association to publicly set a deadline. “ALSA does good work,” said Rosati who has been featured on CBS Evening News, Huffington Post and other outlets for spreading kindness. “But there’s a lack of input from us – the ones suffering. And the only way they can feel the urgency that we feel is by setting a deadline.”
Rosati is also inviting key players to what he calls the Believe Team. The invite list will include patients and caregivers, representatives from Congress, the pharmaceutical industry, government agencies, media and nonprofits. “To expand on Mr. Rosati’s analogy of President Kennedy’s commitment in 1961 to land a man on the moon by the end of the decade,” continued Gregoire “Kennedy pulled together a team of the greatest minds available. That’s what the Believe Team will become. Conventional wisdom may say a cure by 2021 is impossible. With a public commitment and a greater sense of urgency driven by greater patient participation, anything is possible.”
