A community event to honor the legacy of Richard Dockett will be held on June 14, 2014 at 10:00 am on the 6800 block of Crest Avenue, University City, Missouri.  Mr. Dockett, who died June 14, 2013 at the age of 71, dedicated over 40 years to community service, working to help provide a safe and quality way of life for the residents in his community.   A city proclamation dedicating the Pershing School Gym to Mr. Dockett said that he had “tirelessly fought for education, equal justice and economic opportunities in the school district and city.”

A committee formed by Kymal Dockett hopes that Richard Dockett Community Day will help to inspire the next generation of community activists.  In 2013, St. Louis was known not just as the most dangerous city in the United States, but as the deadliest because of a combination of crime and natural disasters. Many communities in St. Louis are failing due to crime, drugs and the lack of people who get involved in their community.  Richard Dockett Community Day and similar events going on this summer are critical to help bring people together in an effort to better their community.

During Richard Dockett Community Day, the Richard Dockett Community Garden will be unveiled, and people will have an opportunity to tour the Pershing Elementary School gymnasium that was dedicated to Mr. Dockett. This event will also include a free concert, food and other fun and educational activities.
