Online eyewear retailer reports on trends in designer glasses and designer sunglasses purchases
DITTO highlights data on the number of customers purchasing non-prescription designer glasses as accessories.

DITTO.com, an online designer eyewear retailer, recently shared some insights into the buying habits of its customers. Specifically the Company highlighted the recent trend in people buying and wearing “fake” glasses.
Based on a review of customers who purchased eyewear frames with clear lenses, DITTO concluded that approximately 15% of customers are purchasing glasses simply as an accessory without any prescribed need (i.e. “faking it”). Fakers were identified as those customers who, between August 2013 and January 2014, opted to pay $39 to add non-prescription lenses with anti-reflective and anti-scratch coatings to their order rather than select the free “No Lenses” option.
This trend is most popular among women under the age of 25 and men between the ages of 25 and 35. Additionally, women are four times more likely to wear fake glasses than men. A related DITTO survey also showed that most customers are wearing fake glasses in order to look smarter. Other reasons for faking it included wanting to look older, trendier and sexier.
Perhaps the least surprising data point? Faking it is most popular in Los Angeles.
