New York, NY (PRUnderground) December 20th, 2012

Traumatic Brain Injury, or closed head injury, can occur from a blow to the head, a car accident, a slip and fall, or medical negligence. In the obvious cases an MRI, or CT scan will show swelling or bleeding of the brain and diagnoses may range from mild concussion to TBI.

Recently however, the oftentimes “hidden” brain injuries suffered by athletes and soldiers have been gaining attention and studies have shown that repeated hits to the head can result in TBI – an invisible yet devastating life changer.

Even degenerative brain disease has shown evidence of a link to head trauma. A New York Times article (Ken Belson, Dec. 3, 2012) discussed how researchers from Boston University Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy, the Veterans Affairs Boston Healthcare System and Sports Legacy Institute studied posthumous brain samples of people who suffered repeated mild traumatic brain injury. The study revealed that 80% of those studied showed evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease.

Attorneys Michael Ronemus and Robert Vilensky have represented numerous brain injury victims, and understand how this kind of injury can wreak havoc on a person’s life.

Michael Ronemus won a 10.8 million dollar verdict for a college student who suffered TBI from an impact to her head in a motor vehicle accident. She was released from the hospital and her symptoms began to reveal themselves slowly. Headaches, cognitive difficulties, diminished memory and inability to focus began to plague her, and she was unable to return to the active life she had led. Ronemus said that “expert testimony is critical in proving cases that have to do with the brain, as the injuries and severity of the problem is not visibly evident to a jury.” The jury concluded that the plaintiff was profoundly disabled from the injury to her brain, and the 10.8 million dollar verdict included lost earnings, future medical costs and pain and suffering.

Recognizing the symptoms of TBI can be extremely difficult, and they vary depending on the severity of, or number of impacts. Difficulty concentrating, loss of coordination, dizziness, personality changes, irritability, blurry vision, headaches, nausea, and fatigue are just a smattering of the variety of symptoms of TBI. If you or a loved one suffers from any of these symptoms following a blow to the head, immediate medical care is essential.
