Lee’s Summit-based Type 1 Diabetes charity, Kids With Courage, was founded and is headed by Daphna Bottcher, who started the organization with her husband after their daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 2006 at age 7. Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. It causes lifelong dependence on insulin and a constant need for blood glucose monitoring. Type 1 Diabetes is different from Type 2 Diabetes and cannot be cured through diet or exercise as is sometimes possible with Type 2.

Kids With Courage provides “Crates Full of Courage” to Kansas City’s Children’s Mercy Hospital locations, where they are given to children when they are diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.
