LaunchGood: A Detroit-Based Crowdfunding Startup for Muslims

Industry: Non Profit & Charity

Inspiring Creativity and Entrepreneurism in the Muslim Community

Detroit (PRUnderground) December 20th, 2013

LaunchGood, a crowdfunding website aimed at the Muslim community, has launched in Midtown Detroit. The site aims to support Muslims doing amazing work all across the globe, especially creative and entrepreneurial endeavors. LaunchGood’s focus is to provide a platform that showcases innovative ideas launched by Muslims, effectively changing the narrative that Muslims are not involved in their communities.

“There are a lot of really incredible Muslim people who are doing cool work,” says Chris Abdur-Rahman Blauvelt, a Muslim of 12 years & CEO/Founder of LaunchGood. “But after the unfortunate events of 9/11, there’s essentially only one narrative shared about Muslims today: that they are backwards people with nothing to contribute. I created LaunchGood to spin that narrative on its head.”

Faris Alami, a local entrepreneur who founded ISM (Integration System Management) and regularly works in the Middle East and North Africa, has been mentoring and advising Chris and LaunchGood, and is impressed with the mission and accomplishments of LaunchGood. “It has been an honor to work with Chris. Chris has discovered an untapped market with LaunchGood and I see a great potential for his effort, not just in America but all over the world. I’m excited for the change it will bring in how the world sees Muslims, and how Muslims see themselves. I look forward to seeing great projects launched.”

Among LaunchGood’s first campaigns are the production of “Here Come the Muhammads, a self-described Muslim Cosby Show, “Nadoona Extreme Fitness DVD,” a workout video for Muslim women that emphasizes modesty and modest workout wear, and a series of children’s apps by award-winning designer Peter Gould. Within three months of its launch, Launchgood has raised nearly $50,000 for 16 different projects, and recently expanded to Australia. They are now exploring worldwide for new projects to start off 2014.

“It is truly amazing to see how powerful crowdfunding is! I was surprised by how incredibly easy it was to set-up and how many people could be mobilized to support a cause!” says Rameya, who used LaunchGood to crowdfund a trip to to educate orphans in Mexico.
