JP-UK Urges Customers to Ensure They Recycle their Used Mitsubishi Projector Lamps
Industry: Technology
Some brands and models of projector lamps include radioactive and toxic materials, due to this it is essential that these items are properly disposed of.

Recycling projector lamps is the responsibility of the owner whether or not their concern is environmentally minded. The reason for this is that projector lamps and bulbs often contain radioactive and toxic materials. It is common knowledge that projector lamps contain mercury. However were you aware of that these lamps may also contain a number of radioactive compounds?
Many modern projector lamps and bulbs contain an amount of Krypton-85. Krypton-85 is a radioactive compound, which is produced in nuclear reactors and is a by-product from processing nuclear fuels. In modern projector lamps a small amount of this gas is added. The reason why this gas is added is that it has been proven to lower the voltage required to ignite the bulb. Lowering this voltage is an important priority of projector manufacturers as it enables them to reduce the size of the bulb and thus reduce the size of the projector unit.
Mitsubishi projector lamps make use of a variety of new techniques in order to reduce the required ignition voltage. In their projector lamps, Mitsubishi make use of “arc tubes” which provide an alternative method of reducing the ignition voltage. This reduction is achieved by a small bubble or cavity within the arc tube. The cavity, which is called a UV enhancing chamber, contains a mixture of argon-mercury and a molybdenum foil which ignites at a much lower temperature.
