JP-UK Explain the Difference between Ink Cartridges and Toner Cartridges

Industry: Technology

One of the most common questions our technical team is asked is “what is the difference between ink cartridges and toner cartridges?” We will answer that question below.

United Kingdom (PRUnderground) April 30th, 2014

Ink Cartridges are used in Inkjet printers and contain liquid ink, which is usually absorbed through a sponge. When printing a document the print head deposits the ink where it is required on the page. The majority of colour ink cartridges consist of three colours in addition to black.

Toner Cartridges, on the other hand, are used in laser printers. As opposed to ink, toner cartridges are filled with a fine powder, which can be magnetically charged. When printing documents with toner cartridges, an electrically charged drum picks up the tiny particles and then rolls them onto the page in accordance with the print pattern. A laser is then used to fuse these particles onto the page.

In terms of performance, the biggest difference between ink cartridges and toner cartridges is their longevity. Simply put, toner cartridges tend to last significantly longer than ink cartridges, however they are also significantly more expensive. If left unused for a period of time, the heads on ink cartridges can dry out or become clogged. Due to this it is important to ensure that an ink printer is used at least once a week.
